Annual 26.2 with Donna –
The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer,
Jacksonville, FL February 2010
We again participated in this wonderful and inspiring event. Donna Deegan, the local TV anchorwomen in Jacksonville, FL is a three-time cancer survivor and marathon runner. She decided to combine her celebrity status and love of running into an event to raise funds for breast cancer research.. Now she didn't think small mind you.... no no no...not just a little event she wanted, but a great BIG one! The 26.2 with Donna, The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer. This year brought over 8,000 participants from all over the United States as well as from other countries.
Regina and I had our colorful Empowered Zone booth set up at the Health and Fitness Expo on Friday and Saturday, prior to Sunday’s race. There were so many people in the Expo Hall on Saturday you might have thought the marathon was being run through there! We are fortunate to have an affiliation with 26.2 featuring our Form Fit BELIEVE Pink T-shirt and our Sterling Silver or Bronze necklaces. When either one of those items is purchased, 25% of the proceeds are donated back to 26.2 with Donna. The ironic thing this year was after we finalized our affiliation with 26.2, Regina's sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. The marathon and the tag line, The National Marathon to FINISH Breast Cancer took on a whole new meaning for us and will continue to do so!
So many people came by our booth and we heard so many stories, the good, the bad and the not so good. But you know what.......they were there! Happy, smiling and just having a good ol' time! We met survivors, those going through treatment and the friends and family that are supporting them. We also met people who tragically lost loved ones to this disease. Reading the commemorative boards and the words written on them by those in the Expo Hall brought tears to your eyes. So much happiness and heartbreak in one small room. On Sunday, the day of the marathon, Regina and I were camped out as part of the cheering section. Just us and thousands of of closest friends along the route! We were at the half way point this year and we saw A LOT of determination on the faces of those going by. Some people looked great and you know they were going to finish in style, some people were "in the zone" and very focused, some were struggling, some were just loving life and working the crowd (The person dressed in a Spiderman body suit was my favorite. How they ran in it I don't know!) and some weren't ever sweating hard! Yet when you cheered anyone of them on, all had smiles on their faces.
Breathing heavy, sweating, one foot in front of the other. One mass of heartbeats, either running or cheering, all beating for the same cause, to FINISH breast cancer. To learn more about the 26.2 with Donna Foundation, please go to :www.breastcancermarathon.com.
